GEHA supports Kansas City-area federal employees through partnership with Harvesters
GEHA | February 3, 2019
More than 9,000 Kansas City area federal employees were impacted by the government shutdown that ended January 25, 2019. While federal employees recovered from the shutdown and waited for their paychecks to arrive, GEHA partnered with Harvesters – The Community Food Network, to help those who still needed emergency food assistance.
During the last week in January, GEHA sponsored four emergency food distribution locations. These locations served people throughout the Kansas City and Topeka, KS areas and helped provide food to 465 households and feed more than 1,775 people.
“The shutdown was difficult for many federal employees, and we wanted to do all we could to support them and their families,” said Darren Taylor, GEHA president and CEO. “Even after the government announced it was reopening, we knew many area residents were still in need of help.”
In addition to distributing food, GEHA hosted a food drive during the month of February to help restock the shelves of area food pantries that had experienced higher than normal demand.
